The great garden at the foot of the Eiffel Tower
The Champ-de-Mars is a vast, fully open public garden that stretches over roughly 24.3 hectares (780 meters long by 220 wide) at the southern foot of the Eiffel Tower, on the side opposite the Trocadéro. It runs from the Iron Lady, to the northwest, all the way to the École militaire, to the southeast, in the 7th arrondissement and the Gros-Caillou district.
Its large central lawn promenades, with their open views of the Eiffel Tower, make it one of the most popular spots in Paris for picnics and relaxing. Originally a military parade ground, the Champ-de-Mars hosted several World's Fairs, in 1867, 1878, 1889, 1900 and 1937. Today you will find children's playgrounds, sports grounds, a bandstand and a Guignol puppet theater.
